Are 22-Inch Tires Common?

You may never see a 22-inch tire on a souped-up "tricycle." You're much more likely to find 22-inch tires on a car, pickup truck or SUV. These tires come in winter, summer and all-season versions.

Is Tire Size Important?

Yes, tire size is important. But it's not the only key aspect of tires.

Larger tires like those in the 22-inch category may contribute to better braking and handling versus smaller tires. Because of their size, 22-inch tires tend to make contact with more of the road than smaller tires, which may generate superior grip.

Of course, 22-inch tires also can make an excellent first impression, thanks to their sheer size. Also, 22-inch tires have less sidewall than smaller tires, so the wheels on 22-inch tires are likely to visually pop more compared with wheels on smaller tires.

Can You Replace Smaller Tires With 22 Inch Tires?

If you have 21-inch tires on your vehicle and want to swap them for 22-inch tires, you may be able to do it. This is known as upsizing or plus-sizing. While you may switch to larger or smaller wheels, you should be aware of the limitations and tradeoffs associated with such a change. The replacement tires should always have a diameter within 3% of the originals so as to not create issues with the function of safety features like anti-lock brakes and stability control. And, if the change is to larger diameter wheels, there may be tradeoffs in the form of increased ride harshness,  longer braking distances and reduced fuel mileage.
